About the photographer

Ian J. Cohn, the author/ photographer, is an architect, designer, and photographer, living in New York City.  The founding partner of the firm, Diversity: Architecture & Design, Mr. Cohn has led the practice for more than 30 years.  During this time, their architectural and interior design work has been widely published, and their graphic design work has received more than 25 national design awards.  Some of the photographs that appear in The Faces of Phlamoudhi were first shown in the exhibit, “Phlamoudhi: Ancestors & Archaeology,” held at Washington University, St. Louis, 1973, and subsequently at the St. Louis Museum of Art, in conjunction with the annual conference of the Archaeological Institute of America, in 1974.

The afterword, “Photography, Memory, and Displacement,” was contributed by Peter Loizos, the late emeritus professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics (and is his copyright © 2009).  Dr. Loizos published two studies of a displaced community in Cyprus.  His book, Iron in the Soul  (Displacement, Livelihood and Health in Cyprus), published 2008 by Berghahn Books, New York and Oxford, would be of interest to readers of The Faces of Phlamoudhi.  In it, Prof. Loizos traces the lives of the villagers of Argaki, Cyprus for the almost 35 years since their forcible displacement in 1974 - a story parallel to that of Phlamoudhi.

Savvas Georgiou, a former resident of Phlamoudhi now living in London, worked closely with the author for 3 years to help identify those pictured, to liaise with the displaced Phlamoudhi community, and to provide translations of text (along with Petros Tekkella) into Greek.
